Well Cuppers, we are now within the one month mark for the start of the 2017 Desert Cup!! I hope each of you are getting in prep rounds... though I hope Team Walker is playing more than the Southers!
One Cupper that is taking things seriously is the Buzzsaw, Matt Fankhauser. This guy appears to be taking his clubs on business trips to make sure he's in top form. He are some picts from his recent rounds.
If you've got photos, send them and I'll post them...
Fank's Kansas Round was held at the Falcon Ridge Golf Club. According, well, to it's own site, "Falcon Ridge Golf Club is nationally recognized as one of the best public golf courses in the Midwest. Located in the southwest suburbs of Kansas City, Falcon Ridge is set among the rolling hills of western Lenexa. Perfectly manicured zoysia tees and fairways lead golfers to some of the best bent grass greens in Kansas City. With beautiful views and unmatched customer service, Falcon Ridge Golf Club offers an unforgettable golf experience for every occasion."
Fank's other round was at the venerable Texas Star Golf Course in Dallas, Texas. The course has been ranked by Golf Digest, the Dallas Morning News, and Travel & Leisure Golf.

Course Preview: The Golf Club at Dove Mountain
Course Preview - The Golf Club at Dove Mountain
Gents, today we are taking a look at Dove Mountain, which is home to the Desert Cup for rounds 2 and 3. Dove Mountain is actually a combination of three nine-hole courses designed by the legendary Jack Nicklaus. The resort was home to the Accenture Match Play, now called the WGC-Cadillac Match Play. Below are some pictures, as well as reviews of the courses we'll be playing.

Cuppers Getting Ready
Good morning, Fellas, from the lovely hamlet of Casablanca, Morocco. Apologies for slacking on the blog and the lack of content. Work has not been friendly.
As I stated in my email, one new feature to this year's blog is to show pictures of you all getting ready for this year's weekend in Tucson.
In the coming weeks, we'll have golf course reviews and some additional interviews for you all to read.
Without further ado...

Kitchenaid Sr. PGA Championship
This past week, I was able to attend the Saturday tournament of the Sr.'s largest major at Trump National. It was something else to see John Daly drive the golf ball. We also saw Mark O'Mera, Vijay Singh, Bernard Langer, and some old dude who played at BYU.
You could pretty much classify the attendees into 4 categories:
I threw some pictures below:
You could pretty much classify the attendees into 4 categories:
- People wearing "Make America Great Again" Hats
- People in camo (please note there was a good deal of crossover with group 1)
- People wearing Loudmouth Golf apparel following John Daly. Fun note - his wife walks the course following him in a matching skirt to his hellacious pants.
- People like me not exactly knowing what the hell what was going on. It was like a gallery from Happy Gilmore...
I threw some pictures below:
Looking down at the fairway of 1 and 18 from the clubhouse.
The 18th green at Trump National with the signature "water feature." Apparently, the Donald doesn't allow the user of the term "Waterfall" ...

That freakin hair

Captain's Interview: Terry Walker
You are moving from Official Commissioner to Non-Playing
Captain. How do you feel about that?
I feel really good about it. In the commissioner role, I usually make
about one ruling a year. It’s a fun opportunity
for more involvement. Also, my rulings
have to be completely objective – that’s only fair. With this, I get to have a little more skin
in the game.
This is your first time you’re playing for points in a
number of years.
Yeah – at least
six or seven years.
Didn’t any of your rounds as a substitute player count for points?
Well, I’ve been on tap to play, but never actually had
to. Remember, the trip to St. George
where Brandon was sick, was probably the closest I’ve had to get. But he had the miraculous return in front of
Gov. Herbert.
Are you nervous, then?
Well yeah. My
hands aren’t that great and I don’t have a ton of stamina. The last time I played 18 holes (edit: with
Brandon at his club last week), the last few holes were pretty ragged.
But I heard the front nine holes were totally on point
Yes. My driving
was great. I’m hoping that with five or
six more rounds, I’ll be getting more stamina and ready.
How are you preparing for the Desert Cup?
Well, I’m getting really good at driving the golf
cart. I’m also trying to get in 10,000
steps each day!
In addition to mastering your cart driving, how are you
preparing?
Just trying to get in more 18-hole rounds
Moving on to your captaincy, how did you approach
choosing your team?
Kerry and I broke the pool of players into low, medium, and
high handicap golfers. We took turns –
and while you don’t get everyone you want, I had a feel for who I thought had a
good chance of scoring. I also tried to
think about people who could ham-and-egg together. But the fact is this – someone on Thursday
could be red hot and then not even be able to find the fairway on Saturday.
Both you and Kerry are original members of the Cup. Looking back over the years, what stands out
the most?
I think that there are two things. First is the growth. If you think about it, we’ve grown from 4-man teams to 10-man teams. 72 holes to 96. It seems to me that the courses over the past few years have also gotten more difficult. A lot big carries off the tee.
But more importantly is the camaraderie. Once
someone has played in the Desert Cup, no one wants to give it up. There’s great camaraderie, it’s a great time,
and everyone wants to do it. Some of the guys want to know during the Desert Cup when it will
be next year so they can get it on the calendar. I'm one of those guys.

Captain's Interview: Kerry South
Gentlemen,
Welcome to another edition of the D-Cup blog. This week, I had the distinct honor of playing golf at the Robert Trent Jones course in Manassas, VA. RTJ has been the host to four President's Cups as well as the 2015 Quicken Loans PGA event. Here's a couple of pics from the day below.

Today, we feature a little Q & A with Captain Kerry South. I love this guy. He's a great, humble guy who, at one time, was mistaken by Brandon to be wearing hearing aids. In actuality, Brandon was looking at the glasses holders/string Kerry had around his neck...
At any rate, enjoy the thoughts from Kerry:
How long have you been playing in the Desert Cup?
Kerry: I have been playing in the D Cup since the beginning. Which we played in Palm Springs back then it was the old guys against the young guys and that first year the old guys won. We all stayed in the same house, cooked some of our meals and just had a wonderful time. The beginning of a great tradition.
What is your favorite memory?
Kerry: So many great memories hard to pick one. One not so good memory. Playing against Rosy on the final hole of the final round. Terry was the marshal and told me just before I hit that the match was tied and that all I need to do for my team to win was win the hole. I think I had two strokes and things looked really good. Then I hit my ball. Topped it and it ran into the weeds. So there goes my advantage and the next shot great. Missed putt to win and I lost to Rosy and we lost tournament by one point. Fun but sad memory……I think even Rosy felt for me that day…….

What is your worst memory?
Kerry: Worst memory was the bike accident I had 3 days before the cup. Thought I could tough it out but after arriving and playing with Gary as my partner in that first round. I made it to the fourth hole and then I could not breathe or swing the club. Worst experience ever. I would hit the ball and fall to my knees and Gary would say are you OK. I would say yeah and try again. Finally realized I was done and could not play. Let alone be competitive. All the guys were so nice to me during that Cup and concerned about my injury. I will always remember the kindnesses and concern….
What was your strategy in building your team?
Kerry: When Terry and I met to pick teams I was looking for players I knew who were consistent and good under pressure. I think I was able to pick some really good players who love to win and have fun.
I wanted players who love the game of golf and are a joy to play with and against. No bullies please. I think Terry and I both did really well. Competitive it will be. And fun loving……Go team South.
How are you preparing for the Cup?
Kerry: After Terry with a new driver and new grips and a new attitude beat me this morning I realize that I need to work on my game. The captain’s match could determine it all and I need to do my part. So team I will work to improve and rise to the challenge.
So team South we need to chant and think. Yes we can, Yes we can. Yes we can. And yes I can, Yes I can. Team South will rise to the occasion. Isn’t the game of golf wonderful……
