Round 1 - Park City Municipal Golf Course

Format: Two Man Best Ball or “Four Ball”
Points: Each match is worth 1 point up to 10 points possible overall. Ties are worth 1/2 point.

Handicapping for Best Ball Matches

"In a four-ball (or better ball of partners) match, there are two teams of two players. Each player plays his own ball, and each team uses the best score of its two players. The player with the lowest handicap plays at scratch. The remaining players adjust their handicaps by subtracting the best player's handicap from theirs. Points: Each match worth 1 point – ties worth ½ a point

Handicapping for 9x9:

Match Play – Averaged Handicaps – Each players handicaps are added up and averaged for a team handicap
Team Handicap: Total of 2 players is divided by 2 to establish the team handicap.
The team with the lower handicap plays at scratch and the other team gets strokes on the number of holes that the two teams handicaps differ.  For example, if one teams average handicap is a 10 and the other a 7 – the team with the lower handicap plays at scratch and the other team gets one stroke on the 3 hardest holes.

Points: Each match worth 1 point – ties worth ½ a point

Handicapping for Singles MatchesThe player with the lowest handicap becomes the baseline handicap and plays at scratch, meaning he doesn't get any handicap strokes. The other player gets his handicap strokes by subtracting the other player's handicap from his. For example, your handicap for this course is 15 and your opponent's is a 6. Subtract 6 from 15; your handicap is 9 and your opponent plays scratch.

Identifying Stroke Holes

Each hole has a handicap number indicated on the scorecard. You subtract a stroke from your score on each hole for which you are allocated a handicap stroke to get your net score for that hole. For example, if you gets nine strokes, you subtract a stroke from your score on each of the nine most difficult holes -- that is, the "1" handicap hole through the "9" handicap hole

Captain’s Rules of Play

General Sportsmanship

     

The overall goal is to have fun while we enjoy some competition. Enjoy who you are paired with – talk and have fun – please leave all music devices at the driving range as it may bother other players and certainly may inhibit conversation.

If there is a disagreement over how a rule should be applied, feel free to contact the your captain for assistance for rulings.  They are not perfect, but will work to best address your question using the USGA handbook. Remember that calling captains will slow down play.

Lost Ball, Out of Bounds, Lateral Hazards and Water

• Hazards will all be played the same for all rounds.  
• For the sake of time, there will be no re-tees
• For the player or team that has lost a ball that reasonably appears to be in the play, there is a one-minute time limit to look for the ball
• The timer starts when both teams acknowledge the clock to begin
• For balls lost in the hazards, there will be a one-stroke penalty; you can place the ball anywhere along the line of flight to the point of entry.  Your opponent must approve your line of flight/point of entry -- please exhibit sportsmanship

Slow Play - May we rid ourselves of the chance for a 6-hour round

Our captains will serve as an unofficial marshal with the goal of keeping all groups in their appropriate positions on the course.

If a group is out of position by more than one hole (more than one hole behind) you will be asked to speed up and put on the clock.

If they cannot catch up in a reasonable time, they may be asked to skip a hole.

Captain Walker's Talking Trash

Boys - the following communique has been received from Terry.  Looks like the pot stirring has started...

The teams have been selected and the first round pairings set.  My prediction for round one: Walker 5, South 0.

It will be a bad start for the weekend for team South.

Interestingly, the teams are pretty closely matched this year - with the average handicap at 11 for Walker and 12.3 for South.  Walker has the ringer with the low handicapper, Mark Smith... while South has the biggest sand bagger with Doug at 19.4 (the heck you say!).  This is the big bagger that plays to a 19 July through May, then to a 10 handicap during the tournament.  We'll plan on Doug going 4-1 this year.

If you all lose Doug on the course, follow the trail of sand leaking out of his shorts.  Aaron has nearly the same handicap, and would lose to Doug 100 out of 100 matches (Aaron's edit.  Hurtful... but true).

I hope Hans is as good on the course as he is on the radio!  He will either play you heads up or get in your head talking you to death.  It's a great strategy and he's my guy.  Don't let me down, Hans!  I will bring you some pie so your blood sugar won't get low (radio joke)!

South has the boring and steady bunch. Of course, no one would ever call Pete or Weeds boring! They are the life of the party on every hole and every foursome... But Gary, Allen, Jon, Eric and Travis wouldn't know a good one-liner if if bit them on the butt.

Just remember that jokes and witty retorts only carry you so far in a tournament as trying as the Desert Cup!

2018 Desert Cup Teams Announced

Good afternoon Gents:

I hope your summer is off to a great start.  It is less than one month away from the D-Cup and, therefore, it is time to provide a few details as well as announce the teams for this year.

A few things that are different than years past:

1. Since the location is very close to home for many, there will be no rooms reserved on Saturday night.  After the round, we will have our dinner and closing prize party and then this year’s events will be over.  If you do want a room, the resort will extend a special rate to you. Please contact them soon if you plan on staying that night.
2. As I announced in the initial email, we will be adding Peter and Hans, making an 11^th player for each team.  The plan is for them to join Friday afternoon’s two-man team round along with the team captains.  Peter and Hans will then play out the rest of the event with us. 
3. We have one new player this year.  Matt Fankhauser’s son is leaving on his mission not long after the Cup so, their family decided to take one last trip together which ended up being in conflict with the Cup.  Matt’s son will be reporting to the MTC in Aug and will be serving in the Minneapolis Minnesota Mission.  Our new player, Mark Smith, is a friend of Aaron’s and spent a few years living in Northern Virginia.  Mark now lives in the Alpine area.

• Bob Woods – When he is not closing deals or developing properties with world-renown golf legends, Bob can often be found making birdies.
• Brent Pulver – We all know this is the strongest 14 handicapper you’ll ever meet.  He has a patented bump-and-run move and putts like the greens are made of glass.
• Gregg Roseborough – Rosie is a good person to have on your team as long as you enjoy short bald people who dress like they’re 23.
• Craig Walker – Craig returns after a few years away and is ready to electrify us with his strong play.
• Adam Sollis – He runs, he swims, he putts, he occasionally hits a fairway.
• Mark Smith – He is the great unknown; a low handicapper who wears a mustache 90% of the year…unfortunately.
• Aaron Walker –  Named Most Improved Player last year, he’s loud, brash and wears a white belt better than a new Tae-Kwon-Do student.
• Tim Shumway – A regular life saver this one – capable of pulling even the lowest performing partner out of the rut and into the winner’s circle.
• Rocky Butler – Rocky loves football, golf and never tires of hearing Bullwinkle jokes.  You all should feel comfortable telling him Rocky & Bullwinkle jokes all weekend.
• Mike Allen – The man straightens teeth for a living and is on the quest to straighten out his driver.
• Hans Olson – The only person in the group who actually gets paid to talk for a living.  Also the sole player in D Cup history to have verifiable crotch rot.

Team Kerry

• Gary Romeril – High school teacher, winning golf coach, Aaron’s voice-volume twin.
• Justin Weidauer – Weeds is a good egg and a long driver – now that he’s living in St. George, he’s been racking up wins in the polygamist tournament circuit all year.  Granted, the top prize was a gift card to Walmart.
• Bryant Arnold – Is looking to take the title of “Best White Belt Wearer” away from Aaron this year.
• Jon Tucker – Now a veteran D-Cupper, JT is wondering how to top the Unicorn feat of Teton Springs and gain another advantage over unsuspecting opponents.
• Allen Boldt – The smoothest guy you will ever meet.  He’ll sweet talk you with his dulcet tones while shanking you with your own 8 iron.
• Brandon Walker – The man, the myth, the legend.  More importantly, the organizer.
• Doug Marx – Annually labeled “most hunted,” though rarely actually caught.  I can only say I am glad he’s on my team.
• Eric Mead – A lifetime Platinum member at Marriott once used points to buy his summer home.
• Jeff Buckwalter – Look out for Jeff…once he finds the zone he will put you away.  Also, the only member of the D Cup Tribe who knows how to hit a “soft driver” for that 175 shot.
• Travis Heath – Travis is the sole person on this trip who looks weird without a beard.
• Peter Fisher – He knows several of you in a very intimate way and is the one person who could make a dong joke and really know what he is talking about.

Actually -  we are looking once again at a true Desert Cup with some pretty awesome temperatures. 

Weather.com claims the temps will be somewhere in the range of 99 to 101 - That said, please be mindful of the heat and prepare accordingly.

  

Prize Money

This year, each member of the winning team will receive $60.00 in prize money.

Commissioner

This year, we are testing the waters without a formal Commissioner.  We do still, however, want to be able to address the various rules questions that will invariably arise.  I have asked our two captains to work together to solve any requests that pop during the course of play.  If you have an issue, please call your captain and they will come work through the issue with you.

Awards Dinner

As tradition dictates, we will again be giving each other copious amounts of prizes.  Some will be lame and others quite awesome.  To remind you, we will not only have the usual prizes for the closest to hole, long drive, and straightest drive, we’ll also have the medical award, as well as the “I can’t quit you award” for the best, most supportive team mate.

Our awards dinner will be immediately after the final round at the Omni Resort in the Desert Willow Salon room.

Points: Each match is worth 1 point up to 10 points possible overall. Ties are worth 1/2 point.

Format of 666 Matches

A Desert Cup classic, 666 divides the round into three 6-hole segments:

·      1-6:      Best ball

·      7-12:    Scramble

·      13-18:   Alternating Shot

Handicapping 666:
