Kitchenaid Sr. PGA Championship

This past week, I was able to attend the Saturday tournament of the Sr.'s largest major at Trump National. It was something else to see John Daly drive the golf ball. We also saw Mark O'Mera, Vijay Singh, Bernard Langer, and some old dude who played at BYU.

You could pretty much classify the attendees into 4 categories:

  1. People wearing "Make America Great Again" Hats
  2. People in camo (please note there was a good deal of crossover with group 1)
  3. People wearing Loudmouth Golf apparel following John Daly. Fun note - his wife walks the course following him in a matching skirt to his hellacious pants.
  4. People like me not exactly knowing what the hell what was going on.  It was like a gallery from Happy Gilmore...

I threw some pictures below:

Looking down at the fairway of 1 and 18 from the clubhouse.

The 18th green at Trump National with the signature "water feature." Apparently, the Donald doesn't allow the user of the term "Waterfall" ...

Looking up 18 to the clubhouse.

Number 11 at Trump National, which borders the Potomac River

That freakin hair

That backswing

That gut.

Captain's Interview: Terry Walker

You are moving from Official Commissioner to Non-Playing Captain.  How do you feel about that?

I feel really good about it.  In the commissioner role, I usually make about one ruling a year.  It’s a fun opportunity for more involvement.  Also, my rulings have to be completely objective – that’s only fair.  With this, I get to have a little more skin in the game.

This is your first time you’re playing for points in a number of years.

Yeah – at least six or seven years.

Didn’t any of your rounds as a substitute player count for points?

Well, I’ve been on tap to play, but never actually had to.  Remember, the trip to St. George where Brandon was sick, was probably the closest I’ve had to get.  But he had the miraculous return in front of Gov. Herbert.

Are you nervous, then?

Well yeah.  My hands aren’t that great and I don’t have a ton of stamina.  The last time I played 18 holes (edit: with Brandon at his club last week), the last few holes were pretty ragged.

But I heard the front nine holes were totally on point

Yes.  My driving was great.  I’m hoping that with five or six more rounds, I’ll be getting more stamina and ready.

How are you preparing for the Desert Cup?

Well, I’m getting really good at driving the golf cart.  I’m also trying to get in 10,000 steps each day!

In addition to mastering your cart driving, how are you preparing?

Just trying to get in more 18-hole rounds

Moving on to your captaincy, how did you approach choosing your team?

Kerry and I broke the pool of players into low, medium, and high handicap golfers.  We took turns – and while you don’t get everyone you want, I had a feel for who I thought had a good chance of scoring.  I also tried to think about people who could ham-and-egg together.  But the fact is this – someone on Thursday could be red hot and then not even be able to find the fairway on Saturday.

Both you and Kerry are original members of the Cup.  Looking back over the years, what stands out the most?

I think that there are two things.  First is the growth.  If you think about it, we’ve grown from 4-man teams to 10-man teams.  72 holes to 96.  It seems to me that the courses over the past few years have also gotten more difficult.  A lot big carries off the tee.

But more importantly is the camaraderie. Once someone has played in the Desert Cup, no one wants to give it up.  There’s great camaraderie, it’s a great time, and everyone wants to do it. Some of the guys want to know during the Desert Cup when it will be next year so they can get it on the calendar.  I'm one of those guys.

Captain's Interview: Kerry South

Gentlemen,

Welcome to another edition of the D-Cup blog.  This week, I had the distinct honor of playing golf at the Robert Trent Jones course in Manassas, VA.  RTJ has been the host to four President's Cups as well as the 2015 Quicken Loans PGA event.  Here's a couple of pics from the day below.

Today, we feature a little Q & A with Captain Kerry South.  I love this guy.  He's a great, humble guy who, at one time, was mistaken by Brandon to be wearing hearing aids.  In actuality, Brandon was looking at the glasses holders/string Kerry had around his neck...

At any rate, enjoy the thoughts from Kerry:

How long have you been playing in the Desert Cup?

Kerry:  I have been playing in the D Cup since the beginning.  Which we played in Palm Springs back then it was the old guys against the young guys and that first year the old guys won.  We all stayed in the same house, cooked some of our meals and just had a wonderful time.  The beginning of a great tradition.

What is your favorite memory?

Kerry:  So many great memories hard to pick one.   One not so good memory.  Playing against Rosy on the final hole of the final round.  Terry was the marshal and told me just before I hit that the match was tied and that all I need to do for my team to win was win the hole.  I think I had two strokes and things looked really good.   Then I hit my ball.  Topped it and it ran into the weeds.  So there goes my advantage and the next shot great.   Missed putt to win and I lost to Rosy and we lost tournament by one point.    Fun but sad memory……I think even Rosy felt for me that day…….

What is your worst memory?

Kerry: Worst memory was the bike accident I had 3 days before the cup.  Thought I could tough it out but after arriving and playing with Gary as my partner in that first round.  I made it to the fourth hole and then I could not breathe or swing the club.  Worst experience ever.  I would hit the ball and fall to my knees and Gary would say are you OK.  I would say yeah and try again.  Finally realized I was done and could not play.  Let alone be competitive.  All the guys were so nice to me during that Cup and concerned about my injury.  I will always remember the kindnesses and concern….

What was your strategy in building your team?

Kerry: When Terry and I met to pick teams I was looking for players I knew who were consistent and good under pressure.  I think I was able to pick some really good players who love to win and have fun.
I wanted players who love the game of golf and are a joy to play with and against.  No bullies please.   I think Terry and I both did really well.  Competitive it will be.   And fun loving……Go team South.

How are you preparing for the Cup?

Kerry:  After Terry with a new driver and new grips and a new attitude beat me this morning I realize that I need to work on my game.  The captain’s match could determine it all and I need to do my part.  So team I will work to improve and rise to the challenge.

So team South we need to chant and think. Yes we can,  Yes we can.  Yes we can.    And yes I can, Yes I  can.     Team South will rise to the occasion.   Isn’t the game of golf wonderful……

First Round Pairings Announced

Hello everyone -

Your D-Cup founder, Brandon T. Walker, has asked that I post the pairings for the first round of the 2017 Desert Cup, held in sunny Tucson, AZ. For the Canyon Course, I've included the your course handicap as calculated by the USGA in parenthesis next to the player's name.

In the coming weeks, we'll be posting course reviews, player interviews, and notes from the Prize Meister, Captains, etc.

Sooo...

Pairing 1 "The Battle of the Guaranteeds"
As each of the players in this foursome have historically been a sure bet to score a point for their captains, this is sure to be a full-on battle.

Team Walker
Bob Woods (10)
Weeds (5)

Team South
The Buzzsaw (10)
Allan Boldt (12)

Pairing 2 "The Big Cottonwood Stake Throwdown"
Each of these players has spent significant time or formative years in the Big Cottonwood Stake.  This match is for all the road shows and deacons' basketball games on carpeted floors.

Team Walker
Brandon (18)
Aaron "You done messed up, A-Aron!" Walker (23)

Team South
The Pulverizer (17)
Buck (Only the Good Lord Knows)

Pairing 3 "The IV Redemption Tour"
This is the match that will determine which of our fallen warriors from We-Ko-Pa will rise above adversity and their predilection to sunstroke and carry their team.

Team Walker
Tyler Kunz (12)
Tucker (13)

Team South
Eric Mead (17)
Mike Allen (14)

Pairing 4 "The Headhunter's Reckoning"
Last year, Sollis collected a mighty headhunting fee as the player who finally bagged Dougie.  The question now is if he can return to the Cup in the same form.

Team Walker
Travis Heath (18)
BA (6)

Team South
Solly (12)
Shummy (12)

Pairing 5 "The Single Digits vs. The Rest of Us"
It's time to see if the single digit guys can handle giving up double digit strokes to players... and if the higher handicappers can take advantage.

Team Walker
Dougie (22)
Rocky (11)

Team South
Gary (4)
Rosie (6)

Announcing the 2017 Desert Cup

Boys -

I am so excited to announce that on July 27 -30, we are headed to to Tucson, Arizona for the 2017 Desert Cup.  The Cup is a special time when we gather together, hope no IV's are required, and apply liberal portions of baby powder and Glide while praying to avoid Hansian crotch rot.

What makes this year especially exciting is that not only are we are going to be playing some of the highest ranked courses in the state, they will be new to nearly all of us. These destination courses will provide a great test for even our best golfers.

The next major announcement is regarding our captains.  As many of you have been captains, you know how difficult it is to not only concentrate on good play, but work to make great pairings for each of us.  With that, I'm excited to tell you that Commissioner Terry Walker and Kerry South have agreed to be our non-playing captains.  Fear not - the captains' match will be played as the final pairing of the tournament.

As with every year, please start looking for some amazing prizes to bring to the Saturday Night Awards dinner. As a reminder, we'll not only be recognizing the winning captain and his team, but longest drives, closest to the holes, the medical award, and the newest edition, the "I Can't Quit You Award" for best teammate.  We need a ton of great prizes to make sure that everyone has the opportunity to take something great home.  I've been informed by Weeds that we will be enforcing the Sollis Rule:

"No gifts will be allowed which have been gifted from years past. All gifts shall have a minimum value of $100, (with the exception of A. Sollis who is required to bring a minimum gift valued at $150 from now until perpetuity."

Please send Brandon a $200 deposit by April 30th.  If he does not have your deposit by the 30th, your spot goes on the open market.  This year, Brandon's preference is to be paid via Venmo on your iPhone or Android.  His user name is @Brandon-Walker-16. If you are not sure how to do this, call Aaron at 801-557-6271 and he will walk you through it.

If you are insistent on written check and snail mail, Your check must be received by April 30th, so plan ahead!  Please send the deposit to:

So, without further ado...

Round 1
The Canyon Course at Ventana Canyon
The Canyon Course is the recipient of numerous accolades for it's layout and beauty.  Most recently, the course was ranked by Golf Magazine as the #15 course in the state.  It was also named the #2 course in Tucson by Golf Advisor... not to bad when you consider there are nearly 50 courses in Tucson alone.

Rounds 2 & 3
The Golf Club at Dove Mountain
Home to the former WGC Accenture Match Play Championship, Dove Mountain has hosted the best players in the world, including Tiger Woods and the final winner of the tournament, Jason Day.  Jack Nicklaus designed the 27-hole course as part of the Ritz-Carlton resort and has quickly become a national favorite.  As the course can be configured in three different 18-hole layouts, we will cover the entire club during rounds 2 and 3.

Rounds 4 & 5
The Omni Tucson National Resort
As current host course for the Tucson Conquistadores Classic, and previous host of the PGA TOUR's Chrysler Classic and Southern Arizona Open, the Omni Tucson National Golf Course takes center stage for the final day of The Desert Cup.  Just this year, the Omni National was named a Gold Medalist in Golf Magazine's ranking of premiere resorts -- only 37 resorts in North America were given this honor.  The Omni's Catalina and Sonoran courses are an amazing locale to wrap up the 2017 Cup.

Finally, I am thrilled to announce that we will be staying at the Omni National Tucson Resort, making our travel on Day 3 pretty easy.  The resort is located at the foot of the Santa Catalina Mountains, making for one of the most scenic places we've ever stayed in.  If you plan on flying in, it is located 30 minutes from Tucson International Airport and 90 minutes from Sky Harbor International Airport in Phoenix.
