Team Shumway

Led by Tim Shumway – a man who has faced many challenges in his life not the least of which was a near fatal “Hansbian” incident several years ago has picked a team of winners including…

 

 

 

 

Travis Heath –  A consistent player, a true gentleman and a proud father – also a past winning captain.  These accomplishments are not in order of importance.

 

 

 

 

Justin Weidauer – Has the distinction of being the tallest player in the Cup this year and rumor has it he is also a 4 year LDS seminary graduate.

 

 

 

 

 

Pete Fisher – a great competitor – the only man who could cut off your balls during the weekend and not go to jail for it – he will be holding a brief seminar (Thursday night) on what the next steps are for Bruce Jenner on his journey to become Catilyn.

 

 

 

Doug Marx – Doug had not lost for like 3.5 years until he lost the Cup last year.  Tim is hoping that Doug takes revenge this year and restores his spotless record.

 

 

 

 

Kyle Peters – a true unknown – literally – here is his LinkedIn bio for your general information.  Apparently, he is a pharmacist by trade, but a flat our killer on the course.  He also knows where all Hans’ skeletons are buried, as he hails from the same home town of Weiser.  Is this why Hans is not here?

Brandon Walker – Happy to be playing in my 10^th Cup this year.  Very excited to see everyone and looking for blood.

Matt Fankhauser – he is doesn’t like to lose and doesn’t do it very often.  They call him BUZZSAW.

 

Jon Tucker ­– Rookie.  Jon is a big BYU fan (although I try not to hold that against him) and an avid golfer.  He hits it long… and sometimes straight.  He’s a fun guy to play with and by no means an easy out.

 

 

 

 

Bob Woods – Our fearless host – he has been fasting that no one would do anything to embarrass him at the Cup for 2 months now.  A good man… and a brave one.

 

 

 

 

 

Team South

Led by Kerry South – this former Marine and current semi-retired man for all seasons has never shrunk from any challenges.  In fact, he embraces them all.  His secret you ask – start each day with a good stretch…. He has selected to go to war with him the following people…

Gary Romeril – This man loves three things in life unconditionally – golf, candy and the Utah Jazz.  He is also a good father and not a bad golfer.  He may snore.

 

 

 

 

 

Gregg Roseborough – Rosie is one of the few bald Cuppers.  His small band of folically-challenged will be welcoming a new player this year in Kyle.  Rosie always in good for a laugh and usually brings some awesome treats to the Cup – we love the guy.  He is opposite Fisher again this year which could be fun.

 

 

 

Aaron Walker – a man who only needs to be introduced as my brother.  In a smaller text of that introduction may also be known as a successful businessman, cyclist, father and entrepreneur.

 

 

 

 

Eric Mead – This guy may take the title of the man who has run the most marathons at the Cup with Buck not being here this year.  Eric is a true road warrior… he’s always on the road, but hopefully he found some time to have a little fun this year.

 

 

Allan Boldt – Allan may be one of the nicest people ever to play in the Cup.  As a past winning captain he will be a good asset to Kerry this year.

 

 

 

 

 

Craig Walker – Craig is always a tough man to face out there.  He came back in style last year taking a few men down with him.  He is a solid player and fun to be around.

 

 

 

  

Brent Pulver – Brent doesn’t mess around much out there.  He is a winner and will be looking to take home some prize money again this year.  He is also related to Doug in some manner.  He is in the glass trade so we imagine he looks at the glass half full… but hopes someone breaks a window so he can replace it.

 

 

 

Bryant Arnold – a successful captain last year.  The one questions is can he do it again – he is a true competitor and survived last year without fighting with Doug.  Will Bryant get revenge against Doug?

Adam "Solly" Sollis - A man who singled handedly put the "trash" in trash talk.  the first of us D-Cuppers to do many things -- including rupturing his Achilles tendon.  Only time will tell if he will return to form and bring his best game after a loooong year of recovery.

As your self-appointed tournament communications director and white belt aficionado, I admit that haven't done much for the website this year.  This is mostly because we're only playing one course this year, so there's not been an opportunity to do all of the course previews as in years past.  

However, as we're about three weeks out, I thought hat I'd try and start getting everyone's competitive juices flowing.

The 2015 Desert Cup Set for Teton Springs

 

 

It's time to start dripping out information.  This year we will be experiencing several firsts in the long history of the Cup...

 

1. We will for the first time (and maybe the last) not be battling the 115 degree heat of the desert - ne need for IV's this year for Eric, Tyler and others. 
2. We will not be playing at more that one resort and perhaps on more than one course - no travel between rounds 
3. We will be playing somewhere that Dr. J, Bobby Knight, Rob Riggle and Lance Bass frequent as members. We may have to watch Hans around Lance

 

No, we will not be playing at a putting green at the Fisher's new investment property or at a course in West Hollywood that Sloan Shaw once took Weeds too but we will be playing at the ever magnificent ...

We will as always arrive on Thursday June 25th for a afternoon round beginning around 1:30 - following which we will have a special Par 3 competition.

 

We will continue play on Friday June 26th and Saturday June 27th with the usual banquet on Saturday night.

 

Pricing will be pretty much the same as years past in the range of 450 - 475 and I will let you know when that is all finalized.

 

A $200 deposit to hold your spot will be due on March 31st.  First 20 to send me a check have a guaranteed spot.

What an honor to play with you this past week.  We truly saw some remarkable things go down.  D-Cup history was made as yet another Cupper went 5-0.  Congrats to  Kerry South for nailing the landing.  Even the East German judge was impressed.  I think you'll probably need to talk to your bishop about the kiss that Arnold laid on you, but you'll probably get off with a wrist slap...

Lodging

This year, we will be staying at the Westgate Flamingo Bay Hotel, which is only 2.5 miles off the Strip.  One change from previous years is that similar to our time in Mesquite and Sand Hollow, we will have four players in each condo.  Each condo has a full sized kitchen and refrigerator, which will allow you to stock up on all the water, Gatorade and breakfast supplies.

The property also features a pool, hot tub, putting green, shuffleboard, a fitness center…just in case you want to get in an early-morning 5k.

TPC Las Vegas is about a 20 minute drive from the hotel, so please keep that in mind should you decide to try and drop off baggage before our first round.

Our team room assignments have been made by the captains.  Room assignments and corresponding confirmation numbers are listed below.  Please note that all lodging fees have been paid, but you will need to leave a card on file for incidentals.

Travel

Please remember that the hotel is more than 30 minutes away from our courses on Friday and Saturday.  It is not advised that you try to get back inbetween rounds, so keep that in mind when you leave your room for the day.

Our first round at TPC begins at 2 p.m.  Please arrive no later than 1:20 to check in with our group.

Weather

While we aren’t expecting the heat wave that we saw last year, the weather is still going to be above 100˚ for each round.  Please take hydration seriously.  Who can forget Tyler getting an IV between rounds at We-Ko-Pa last year due to the heat?!

Most everyone has a FroggTogg towel - make sure to bring it.  If you don’t have one, you can find them at Amazon.com or Wal-Mart.

Prize Money

This year, each member of the winning team will receive $60.00 in prize money.

2014 Desert Cup Itinerary

THURSDAY – June 26th, 2014

Round 1 – TPC Las Vegas

Format: Two Man Best Ball or “Four Ball”

Each match is worth 1 point up to 10 points possible overall. Ties are worth 1/2 points

Handicapping for Four Ball Matches
In a four-ball (or better ball of partners) match, there are two teams of two players. Each player plays his own ball, and each team uses the best score of its two players. The player with the lowest handicap plays at scratch. The remaining players adjust their handicaps by subtracting the best player's handicap from theirs. For example, your partner is a 6 and you're a 15; your opponents have handicaps of 7 and 9. Your partner plays scratch, you get 9 strokes and your opponents get 1 stroke and 3 strokes, respectively.

Identifying Stroke Holes

Identification of stroke holes is done the same manner as referenced above for singles match play

Each match is worth 1 point up to 10 points possible overall. Ties are worth 1/2 points

Format of 666 Matches

 

A Desert Cup classic, 666 divides the round into three 6-hole segments:

• 6 Holes Best Ball (Best net score of one team player versus best net score of one of opponent’s team player for each hole).
• 6 Holes Alternate Shot: shots carry over to next hole; conceded shots count as a shot.
• 6 Holes Scramble –every shot, every putt.

Handicapping 666

666 uses a team handicap. Each team adds up their handicaps and divides by 2. This becomes their team handicap. The lower teams handicap becomes scratch and the other team receives the strokes on the hardest holes.

SATURDAY – June 28^rd, 2013

Round 4 – The Revere Golf Club, Lexington Course

Handicapping for Singles Matches

The player with the lowest handicap becomes the baseline handicap and plays at scratch, meaning he doesn't get any handicap strokes. The other player gets his handicap strokes by subtracting the other player's handicap from his. For example, your handicap for this course is 15 and your opponent's is a 6. Subtract 6 from 15; your handicap is 9 and your opponent plays scratch.

Identifying Stroke Holes

Each hole has a handicap number indicated on the scorecard. You subtract a stroke from your score on each hole for which you are allocated a handicap stroke to get your net score for that hole. For example, if you gets nine strokes, you subtract a stroke from your score on each of the nine most difficult holes -- that is, the "1" handicap hole through the "9" handicap hole

Round 5 – The Revere Golf Club, Concord Course

2014 Captain’s Rules of Play

General Sportsmanship

·         The overall goal is to have fun while we enjoy some competition

·         Enjoy who you are paired with – talk and have fun – please leave all music devices at the driving range as it may bother other players and certainly may inhibit conversation.

·         If there is a disagreement over how a rule should be applied – feel free to contact the Commissioner for a ruling – he is not perfect but tries his best to settle disputes via the rule book – Terry 801-652-5153

·         His rulings are final – but having him come to help will cost time and slow down play

Lost Ball, Out of Bounds, Lateral Hazards and Water

·         Hazards will all be played the same for all rounds.

·         For the sake of time, there will be no re-tees.

·         For the player or team that has lost a ball that reasonably appears to be in play, there is a one-minute time limit to look for the ball.

·         The timer starts when both teams acknowledge the clock to begin.

·         For balls lost balls or balls hit out of bounds there will be a two stroke penalty but you will be given the distance of the previous shot.  You get to place the ball 2 club lengths from the agreed upon  line of entry where it went out of bounds or became lost.  Your opponent must approve your line of flight/point of entry.

·         If a ball is hit into a hazard there will be a one stroke penalty; you can place the ball anywhere 2 club lengths from the point of entry into the hazard along the line of flight. Your opponent must approve your line of flight/point of entry.

Playing the wrong ball

·         Loss of hole

Slow Play - May we rid ourselves of the chance for a 6 hour round

·         The Commissioner will serve as an unofficial marshal with the goal of keeping all groups in their appropriate positions on the course.

·         If a group is out of position by more than one hole (more than one hole behind) he will ask them to speed up.

·         If they cannot catch up in a reasonable time they may be asked to skip a hole
